We should stand with the poet Emily Dickinson, who urged us not to lose our sense of alarm, of dismay, of shock.
I just heard
a portion of trump at his rally the other night.
Over the
course of an hour or so, he lied, made fun of an over weight supporter, called
political rivals the same childish names and insulted everyone and anyone he
could think of… as he pranced, preened and puffed up to his adoring, red
hat-wearing devotees…who didn’t seem to notice or care that he repeated many
thoughts as if he was spouting them for the first time.
How has the
nation sunk to this low level of having an incredibly embarrassing president
and his acolytes joining him at his infantile, non-serious, hateful rallies?
Honestly,
what the fuck has happened and is still happening in America that we have such
a gross, detestable person as president who is supported by 35-40% of American
voters and 80+% of Republican voters?
I seem to be
just repeating what I’ve said and written for the past 2 and a half years and
am running out of adjectives that adequately describe his boorish, loutish,
dangerous behavior and words. How can we have chosen such an infantile and seriously
incompetent individual to lead our country? For me, worse yet is how can
millions of Americans feel as if he’s the one to continue leading our country?
How can
anyone, a n y o n e in their right
mind continue to support a person who lies almost as often as he take a breath?
Don’t they know he lies constantly? Don’t they realize that he’s indifferent to
the future of anything but the amount of adoration he thinks he’s getting from his
followers?
He’s
dangerously impulsive, mercurial and incurious. It seems as if a large
percentage of Americans don’t care if the president doesn’t read and study…maybe
his 35-40% of acolytes doesn’t read either. Don’t these Americans care if the
president doesn’t believe in science or cultural, military, geographical and
political history? Perhaps these people are anti-science and entirely
unschooled in history too? And, don’t give a damn.
Is it
possible that trump’s supporters are almost all either greedy, hateful, racists
and ignorant or a large number of them simply gullible and don’t want to admit
their humiliating mistake of voting him into office; and they are doubling down
on their decision?
And, that’s
not the worse part. Most Republican elected office holders are silent as he
regurgitates his lies, repeats his ill-mannered behavior and demonstrates his
lack of critical thinking.
It’s not
enough for them to say that they abhor some of the vile, idiotic things he says
and does but they agree with his 2 Supreme Court picks, or his tax giveaway to
the ultra rich or his de-regulation of industry. You support him, you vote for
him and you finance him hence, you own
him and his craziness-in total.
When you
support, vote for or finance him, among numerous other things, you are
financing the degradation of our environment, ripping children from mothers’
arms and speeding up the loss of health care to millions of your fellow
Americans.
A 3-legged
stool holds up his regime. Trump. Republican Senators and Congressmen. And,
35-40% of actual, real, living and breathing Americans.
Greed,
ignorance and hatred are the 3 foundational principles keeping trump in power.
Eventually,
when he ultimately, outrageously flames out, and he will, his staff, his followers,
his sycophants and his bootlickers will quietly remove themselves from him and his shameless, insidious demagoguery as if they did nothing, saw nothing.
His enablers
will say that they didn’t know what he was doing or that they were just
following orders. We’ve heard that in Germany and Italy within our memories.
In the end, we should stand with
the poet Emily Dickinson, who urged us not to lose our sense of alarm, of
dismay, of shock.
