Starry Night

WikiLeekZ is Our Name, Satire is Our Game

At midnight tonight, CIndy suggested that if I had the energy and was awake enough, that I step outside and look at the stars. We were staying overnight in a fancy ‘cabin’ beside the Trinity River, high in the Trinity Alps in N California.
I put on my slippers, opened the door, walked out on the deck and looked up at the dark night sky through the pine trees.

“I’ve never seen anything like this” Cindy said, as we both looked up and saw what Carl Sagan famously said in his familiar accent, at the majesty of “billions and billions” of stars over our heads.

I had seen the stars like this before, in all of their spectacular grandeur, as they were tonight. Sometimes as a Boy Scout sleeping under the starry canopy of Camp Wisdom in the ‘mountains’ near Dallas or later when camping in Yosemite or sleeping outside under the dark sky and bright stars in the desert.

But seeing them anew tonight, after so many years, made me think of how small and fleeting I am as an individual...how tiny we all are as human beings in the grand scheme of the cosmos. Tiny, yes, but not insignificant at all...if we choose to aspire to something greater and work to attain those aspirations.

I then made the mental leap to our president and how, seemingly, throughout his life and again yesterday, has chosen to be a tiny human being. He has not thought of nor sought to elevate himself as an individual human being...nor to see and attempt a greater destiny than that of venal self absorption.

He would do well to step outside at night when he is far away from the protective cover of modern lights...perhaps at one of his pep rallies in North Dakota and spend a few seconds of self-reflection on the enormous beauty, the mystery and power of those billions of stars and of his place in our universe.

As human beings, we usually have the ability to make choices as to how we conduct our own lives; in turn, those choices will affect a few or sometimes many of our fellow mans’ lives.

Mr President, step outside, all alone, one clear night and look up. The billions of stars will be there for you to see. For just once in your life, take a moment to try to absorb and comprehend how small and insignificant you are now and think of how beneficial and widely admired you could become.

In the blink of a cosmic eye, you will be gone, as we all will be. But your history and your legacy, as will all of ours, live on. How do you want to be remembered? How shall we all be remembered by others who will living under that canopy of awesome beauty and power a millennium from now?

There is beauty and mystery in the stars and there also is knowledge and understanding to be discovered by us all.
